Momwash is Now Rinçit
We received feedback that Momwash isn’t inclusively named. I acknowledge this truth and am happy to share that after some consideration, Momwash is now Rincit. We’ve also taken this opportunity to make some improvements to the formula that will extend its shelf life, without adding harmful toxins.
The formula is mostly the same. It’s still made from exclusively organic herbs and specifically formulated to soothe the sorest parts; and we now add Grapefruit Seed Extract, a plant-based preservative that is toxin free.
A few weeks ago, while scrolling Instagram I stumbled upon Stephanie Alinsung’s account and her zine “I am not a mother.” Reading it, introduced me to a new term; partumhood.
Motherhood attempts to describe the vast spectrum of experiences birthing and raising a child can include. But motherhood has too narrow a definition to fully capture the experiences of those of us who do not identify as women or call ourselves moms; but do give birth.
We at Birthbox are; obviously not infallible to using the language of yesteryear. It is convenient, generally accepted and requires little explanation. But like anti-racism, we know that doing what’s easy is not always what’s right and it’s not enough to hide behind intent. We are focused on the impact of our actions, not what we intended to do with action.
In our quest to raise visibility of the partumhoods of queer and cis people, we are committed to listening, learning, and doing better when we know better. Representation matters, and we certainly do not wish to minimize or erase anyone’s experience.
For these reasons Momwash is now Rinçit. Whether you receive the old or new packaging in your Birthbox, rest assured that you are receiving the same great product. Thank you for holding space for us to learn and the patience to teach us and tell us when we fall short. You will see the photos on this website updating as we work to make the necessary changes.
Birthbox is for everybody. Our rinse is for every body. People who’ve given birth, people who haven’t, people who have periods and people who make poo can all use Rinçit.
Lavender and other soothing herbs give Rinçit it’s soothing properties, and it also has the power to reduce paper waste. By rinsing instead of wiping you are reducing the amount of single-use paper you consume, which is better for the planet and septic systems everywhere. Rinse, don't wipe in partumhood and beyond.
