3 Things We Learned at Our First Pop-Up Market

We just wrapped the first in-person market we’ve ever done and had such a good time spending the day at Artists & Fleas. We decided to share a bit about what we learned at the event because some of our takeaways also apply during labor. As you ready yourself for the workout of your life, we hope these helpful tips will smooth out your transition and get you on your way to acing the early days of parenting.

Here’s what we learned:

  1. It takes more than you think it does. A little pre-planning never hurt anyone. We spent three weeks getting ready for this event and even though we thought we had everything covered, every time we ran through there was always one more thing that we thought we should add; or one thing we figured we could do without. As early as you can figure out what those things are for you. There’s a saying that everyone has a plan until they get punched. Pregnancy is full of surprises, plan out what you can so you can be ready for the punches that will inevitably arise.

  2. Signals are key. As we prepared for the market, we made signs for everything; each product on display, the pillars of postpartum wellness, our prices, etc. We had to communicate to people walking by all the important information we wanted them to walk away with; and we had to do it in multiple ways since people ingest information differently. We had to send the signals in order for others to understand what our products and company were all about. You have to do the same with your birth team. You have to tell them all the things you want for your birth experience. Like what kind of drugs you want; if any, how much time you want to pass before they cut the cord what kind of emergency interventions you prefer; if they’re needed. You can document all of this and more with our free birth plan template.

  3. Meet everyone. We talked to every single person who walked by our pop-up store and did our best to share what we now know with everyone who’d listen. We shared the Birthbox herbal teas and made a few new friends this weekend. You’ll want to do the same with your birth team. Before you even begin to imagine your labor; take a tour of the place you’ll be giving birth in. Converse with the staff and get to know a bit about their viewpoint. It can help you be more at ease in the difficult moments if you feel connected to the people assisting you in this most vulnerable moment. In between contractions is no time to attempt to get to know who you’re surrounded by. It’s so important that you are comfortable and feel safe. Your body is designed to slow labor if you aren’t feeling safe, so we recommend building relationships with the people who’ll help welcome your little one into the world; because labor is long enough.
